The Monahans Area
Located just past the Texas panhandle, you will find Monahans, TX.; along west I-20, 35 miles southwest of Odessa at the center of the Permian Basin – a sedimentary basin that was once an ocean; formed during the Permian Period. It’s central location at the basin makes it a significant member of the oil and gas production region.
The land was discovered in 1583 after Antonio de Espejo , a Spanish voyager, journeyed through the land in route through what is now New Mexico. The land was inhabited by the Vaqueros Indians. The area was further populated with the construction of the transcontinental railroad. During this time, a water well was dug out of necessity for the railroad workers and their animals creating the first water supply that was a significant factor in the city’s development coupled with the availability of affordable land. With the discovery of oil, drove many people with diverse occupational backgrounds to the area converting the area from an agricultural town into an industrial zone.
